A Bracelet with a Story to Tell™:

Black-Capped Chickadee Bracelet Inspiration: If you remember, I asked a couple of weeks back if there was a particular Alaskan bird you would like to see made into a Birds of Alaska bracelet.  I was asked to make a Black-Capped Chickadee bracelet, and that’s what we’re introducing today!

The Black-Capped Chickadee is a very familiar bird to Alaskans.  They don’t migrate in the winter, and you will even spot them up in Fairbanks, where it’s very cold and dark.  They’re tough little birds.

We have quite a few that eat from the suet we put out all year long.  I love to watch them line up on the string lights over the garden waiting their turn.  They’re song is so sweet.  It sounds like, “Hey, Sweetie.”

According to the Alaska Department of Fish & Game, the Black-Capped Chickadee has “black cap and bib, white cheeks, soft gray back, wing feathers gray edged with white, and soft buffy-colored underparts grading to white in the center.”

I read something very interesting.  I’ve always wondered how do these little songbirds, Chickadees, Nuthatches, etc. stay warm during the cold winters.  They will put on 10% of body fat every day, and then they burn that 10% of body fat at night to stay warm.   Oh, how nice that must be!!

As I was researching the Black-Capped Chickadee, I read something that struck me.  They’re small birds.  They are about 4.7–5.9 inches and only weighing in .3-.5 ounces.  That’s little.  I read a comment that though they’re little birds, they have a big personality.  That’s so true!

I took the big personality as my jumping off point.  After making several prototypes of bracelets, we decided that the one using the bigger beads really stood out to match that big personality.

The three polished Black Agate in the center represent the black cap on their head, which is where they get their name.  

On either side of that I used a single white Howlite.  The white Howlite with the gray veining represents the white and gray feathers on the body.

Next I used two gray druzy on either side to represent the gray feathers, and then I finished it off with a Grey Saucer Natural Wood Beads just for some fun because Chickadees are not serious birds.  They remember things, they grow accustomed to people, and even our dogs, so that they don’t fly away when we come out on the deck.
