A Bracelet with a Story to Tell™:
Spruce Grouse Bracelet Inspiration: For several years, we’ve been briefly visited by various grouse. We’ve had a couple that love to sit in the willow tree in the evenings, making photos nearly impossible because of the dim light.
According to the Alaska Department of Fish & Game, “Alaska is home to three ptarmigan species - white-tailed ptarmigan, rock ptarmigan and the state bird, willow ptarmigan. Grouse include spruce grouse, sharp-tailed grouse, sooty grouse and ruffed grouse.”
According to the Denali Education Center, “Here in the Interior and in Southcentral Alaska, the brown-tipped tail distinguishes the spruce grouse from the ruffed and sharp-tailed grouse. They are dark, chunky birds which are hard to spot unless they move or are on a roadside gathering gravel for their gizzards.”
The Alaska Department of Fish & Game has identified these birds better than I ever could. “The male spruce grouse has a black throat and red comb over the eye and a rusty-orange band at the tip of the tail. The female lacks the red comb and the black throat. She is generally a mottled rusty brown to gray color with dark heavy barring on her whitish-colored belly. The spruce grouse of Southeast Alaska lacks the rusty band on the tail, which characterizes other Alaskan spruce grouse, but has white-tipped feathers overlying the tail.”
Alaskan Interpretation: The black matte bead represents the black throat and the 2 red barbell beads on either side represent the red comb over the eye of the male spruce grouse.
Their bodies are speckled brown and gray, so you’ll find 3 gray wooden beads on either side of the red barbells. The gold filigree beads at the end of either side represent the rusty band on the tail.
As always, these bracelets are available in either gray, black, or brown leather. Your choice.
